Why I Believe in the Potential of Technology
It was until I was in high school that I decided that I would be pursuing a degree in Computer Science. Although computers were not my thing since I was a kid, the little programming that we were taught in high school simply appalled me. I love the way that I could create simple application by coding some binary codes and by the time I was done with high school, I had two video games that I had created in my portfolio. This made me feel that computers were my thing.
I never managed to qualify for a degree; therefore I decided to settle for a diploma in the same. I tried all my best to learn and I felt that one day, I would pursue a degree. I did well in my final papers and graduated successfully.
I would have pursued a degree just after completing my diploma but I had limited resources and my parents were not able to fund me at that time given that my two sibling sisters had joined college. Therefore I had to wait for two more years before achieving my dreams.
Working as a Data System Administrator Taught me to Observe Security in Networks
Six months after graduating with my diploma, I was given a job at a local mission hospital as a system administrator. I loved the job and devoted myself into working on it. By the time the two years were over, I had saved enough to educate myself as I pursued a degree but I didn’t go for it. By that time, I had been promoted at my work place and I was the serious in the Data Storage Department. The salary was also good and I so no need to further my studies. I was also planning to get married soon and settle for family life hence I didn’t see a reason to quit the job.
The one day while at work, there was an intrusion in the database. I realized something fishy was going on and so were my juniors. We decided to work on it and as I tried to detect where the hack could have been, I made a mistake which cost me my job. I don’t exactly know what happened, but within a whisker, all the information in the database was gone.
What made matters worse was the fact that I rarely updated the back-up of the patients’ record and thus little could be restored. I tried all I could to retrieve the information to no avail. Therefore the best choice was to reports the matter to the authorities. I never considered it that serious, but within the next two weeks, the board had voted for my dismissal. Actual they cited that my qualification didn’t mandate me to hold such a position.
Dejected, I packed and left. I tried securing another job, but even after four months of seeking one, none was coming forth. I then decided to get back to school and pursue a degree.
Never Give Up On What You Believe In
I went back to college. I was very determined to make it. It is here that I came to completely familiarize myself with UNIX. During my days studying for my diploma, we never studied much about UNIX; actually it wasn’t even popular then. I realized how powerful, the OS was and the immense potential that it had. I diligently studied to muster it and passed all it certification.
After graduating with a degree and being a good in UNIX I landed my first job in the infrastructure management domain. The job was quiet exciting and I really loved it. Six months down the line I started focusing on cloud infrastructure and today I sit at the helm of the IT department in one of the major banks in my country. Never give up.
